Inventors are described as creative people whose curious mind enable them see new possibilities and solutions to existing problems.
Whether the invention is as globally relevant as a telephone or as simple as a can opener, its usefulness in solving problems makes the initiator distinguished.
Having attended several big parties, weddings, burial ceremonies and events, and seeing the unhygienic and crude way dirty plates are being washed, Seun Sanni, a 26 year old undergraduate at Federal Technical College, Yaba decided to put his creative abilities to good use and designed a mobile dish washing device suitable for such public functions. The device can be assembled or dismantled within few minutes and serves as a convenient and hygienic way for washing dirty plates.
With Otunba Gadafi of DMT Mobile Toilet as his role model, Mr Sanni, who was raised in Mushin, a place most people would call the ‘Ghetto' kept thinking about ways to do things differently.
"I was born and brought up in Itire road Mushin," he said. "Right from my tender age I have always wanted to be different from every other people. I see things happening everyday and it was like I don't see hope in the face of the people then I said to myself, I have to buckle up my shoes. Then I started thinking, sleeping late at night and was always conscious of everything around me and I didn't let my pen rest until I was able to craft out the mobile washing base." With his idea formed, he drew a picture of what it would look like and gave it to someone who helped him build the device who in turn earned his admiration.
"I employed someone to make the mobile washing base according to a drawing that I presented and direction that I gave," he said. "All together, I spent over N50,000. After production, the man gave me a hand shake and said "your mobile washing base has increased my knowledge". From that day he started calling me ‘Aburo'.
The device is made from materials that can be readily purchased at the market like iron pipe , ready made washing base, rubber holes and tap hubs. Mr Sanni's team ‘Plate Doctors' is made up of himself and three other young men who render their services at public functions for a fee. With this, he has been able to create employment not just for himself but for other people and he plans to expand his business. When he started ,he was charging N10,000 , he however bowed to his client's pressure to reduce , now his fee is N8000.As part of expansion , he said he plans to extend his services to roadside food joints which lack proper dishwashing facilities.Mr Sanni listed the numerous uses of his mobile dish washing machine :It prevents the plates from damages, it keeps the environment clean from the food remnants and it helps to wash the plates and cutleries properly."
For Mr Sanni who is also into church decoration and video coverage at events, his mobile dishwashing device gives him more joy because people appreciate his innovation."I feel happy at every event because people are always excited when they see the innovation, though it's been very difficult but God is helping us," he said.
